It gives me a great pleasure in taking out a new book ‘Gynecological and Obstetric Pathophysiology’. Pathophysiology is the subject that deals with the functional changes that accompany a particular disease or syndrome. In the broad sense, it includes the epidemiology, risk factors, etiology, pathogenesis, and progression of disease including its complications. It is the why and how for the disease processes. It forms the basis of understanding a disease, so that meaningful steps can be taken in its management and prevention. When I was a student, I had to struggle information on pathophysiology of various conditions encountered in Gynecology and Obstetrics, the subjects I loved and love as much even now. The information was patchy at times, and nonexistent for some topics. I could not find a single book devoted to this subject, and the condition is not much better even today. I spent a lifetime practicing Gynecology and Obstetrics, adding to my knowledge through experience and continued study. I thought I owed it to the scientific community to put down my collected knowledge in the form of a book, and here it is. I understand that the subject is sometimes a little overwhelming for students. But I am sure the inquisitive minds of the young people studying to be doctors and consultants will find it interesting to learn why and how things happen the way they do. It is important to study this, because it forms the basis of understanding of the nature of the diseases they will diagnose and treat. I hope this book meets their needs. I have made this book available free for all, because I believe that money or a lack of it should not be a deterrent for those who seek knowledge.
